The Power of Small Changes

Driving to church, I pondered the mix of last month events: Valentine’s Day, the Chief’s Parade, shooting, Ash Wednesday, death, and my dental appointment right on Valentine’s Day. Life’s strange compositions—love, victory, death, hatred, pain, and ashes—mirror our church community’s tapestry of experiences. This blend of victories and everyday moments is a metaphor for our congregation, embracing both history and new visions for the future.
I took a different route to church this morning, inspired by curiosity. This small change offered a new perspective, reminding me of our church’s aspirations to bring back old and new members. This Lent let’s explore beyond our usual paths, whether through new events or simple detours, to deepen our community connections.

Talking to our members, I’ve heard several innovative approaches on how to renew our glorious days. These include “Adopt-a-Pew” Sunday—have you noticed how full our pews are when several generations from one family come together?—and sharing our stories through the “Legacy Project” during services, in writings, Facebook group “Journey to 190: Independence First UMC’s Anniversary Circle”, and on our “Monday Coffee Hour” and “Tangled Time” podcasts. On March 3rd, we welcomed our new member Joann Chretien, and during the summer, we’re considering outdoor church gatherings. Did I hear “Ice Cream Social”? I am in. Are you?
Embracing these initiatives, we aim not just to fill our pews but to enrich our spiritual life and community connection. Let’s step out of our comfort zones, inspired by the strength and diversity within our church family. Together, we can build a vibrant, inclusive community, sharing our faith’s stories and grace. Can we commit to this change together?
